“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young...” – 1 Timothy 4:12

In a world where experience is often praised and youth is seen as a limitation, it’s easy to feel like you have to “wait your turn” before God can use you. But Scripture tells a different story. Time and time again, God has chosen young people to fulfill His plans, showing that age is never a barrier for Him.

1. God Uses Young People – It's in the Bible

Timothy

Paul’s encouragement to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12 says:

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Timothy was young, yet Paul told him to lead by example. His age didn’t disqualify him—it qualified him to show that spiritual maturity is about obedience, not just years lived.

Jeremiah

When God called Jeremiah, he hesitated:

“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”
But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am too young.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.’” – Jeremiah 1:6-7

Jeremiah thought his youth made him incapable, but God reminded him that when He calls, He also equips.

David

Before David was a king, he was a teenage shepherd boy. While others saw his age and inexperience, God saw his heart. That’s how he ended up defeating Goliath while grown men stood back in fear.

“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7

2. You Have a Purpose – Right Now

Don’t wait to “grow up” to start doing something for God. Whether you're in school, college, or just figuring life out, God can and wants to use you right where you are. Maybe it's through encouraging a friend, starting a prayer group, or simply living boldly for Jesus in your daily choices. Jesus didn't start a youth ministry—He started a movement with young people. The disciples were likely teenagers or young adults when Jesus called them. And yet, they turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6).

3. How to Be Used by God in Your Youth

  • Be Available: You don’t need all the answers—just a willing heart.
  • Stay in the Word: Your strength comes from God’s truth, not your own ability.
  • Lead by Example: Even if no one else is, choose righteousness.
  • Pray Boldly: You’re never too young to intercede, worship, and step into spiritual authority.

Prayer Declarations

Declaration 1: I Am Called and Chosen

Scripture:“ You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.” – John 15:16Prayer:

Lord, thank You that I am chosen by You. I may be young, but You have called me for such a time as this. I declare that I am not overlooked or disqualified. I am appointed to bear fruit that will last. I will walk boldly in my purpose and shine for Your glory. Use me to impact my generation for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Declaration 2: I Am an Example of Faith

Scripture : “Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” – 1 Timothy 4:12Prayer:

Father, help me to be a light in the world and a leader among my peers. I declare that my life will reflect Jesus in every way—how I speak, how I act, how I love, and how I live. I choose to honour You with my youth and to be a living example of faith and purity. Strengthen me to live for You daily. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Final Encouragement:

Don't believe the lie that you have to wait to be older, wiser, or more experienced to be used by God. If you're breathing, you're ready. The same Holy Spirit that empowered Peter at Pentecost, that gave wisdom to Solomon, and that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you—right now.

So rise up. Say yes. You’re not the church of tomorrow. You’re the church of today.
